Background and theme

Background details

Hardy’s love poems are poems of regret. It is reasonable to assume that this poem is autobiographical. Failed encounters between a man and woman are characteristic of his work.

What the poem is about

The poem describes what the speaker sees from a window. The male figure in the poem has clearly devoted his attention to insignificant things. The message of the poem is that something important could have happened in the room, but he was looking at the outside world.
