Background details

Sheep Fair is set in the 19th century rural countryside and features the practice of auctions. It depicts the hardship of life in the past, with long hours spent working outside.

What the poem is about

Here, Hardy remembers the misery and discomfort of country life. He develops typical rural characters: shepherds, buyers, and the auctioneer.

The postscript leaps forward in time with the older Hardy looking back to his youth. The poet’s point of view has become retrospective.
