Poet’s use of language

  • References to Greek mythology
  • The extended metaphor of the process of thatching
  • Simplicity of style, which however conveys a revelation of meaning
  • Visual details of the trade: ‘bag of knives’
  • The first two stanzas carry on through a pause into the third to accentuate the progression and development of the thatcher’s work
  • The fourth brings the poem to a conclusion, signifying that the thatching is complete
  • Suddenness of ending illustrates the magical quality to his work
