Background and theme

Background details

Many of Hardy’s poems have a rural setting, with closely observed natural details, particularly of small, unobtrusive creatures. Students need to understand what a ‘ford’ is.

What the poem is about

The poem is based on a child’s encounter with nature. Each animal is carefully observed and characterised. The baby has learned a lesson by the end of the poem.
