Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment

FAQs

Can I enter two different levels in one academic year?

Yes. There are two qualification entry periods each year, in October and February. If you register for the October entry period, moderation will take place the following January. If you register for the February entry period, moderation will take place in June.

It is possible to begin Level 1 in September for moderation in January, then begin Level 2 in January for moderation in June. However, you must ensure that your work is completed within each series.

Can I take a full academic year to complete my four Level 2 units?

Yes. If you begin the qualification in September, you will have until the following May to complete all the work ready for moderation in June.

If you choose to work through the academic year, you need to register in February.

What must I do to complete the full qualification?

To achieve the qualification and receive your certificate, you must have fully completed all the necessary units by the time of the external moderation:

  • one mandatory unit for Level 1; or
  • all three mandatory units plus one of the optional units for Level 2.

How is my work marked?

You will build up a portfolio of evidence for all units. Your teacher/tutor will assess your work for each unit. Your centre will check that your work meets all the required standards. An External Moderator from CCEA will examine a sample range of candidates’ work to ensure it meets the specification requirements. They will also check that the evidence produced is your own, valid and reliable.

What happens if there is a problem with my work?

First, you should discuss the problem with your teacher/tutor. If you are not satisfied, you should be able to access your centre’s internal policy for appealing the decision. Your centre co-ordinator will advise you about further action you can take if you are unhappy with the final outcome.

Will I meet the External Moderator from CCEA on moderation day?

No, the External Moderator will review your evidence outside your centre. (External moderation for Substance Misuse Awareness is by post.)

Can I combine a range of different evidence for my final portfolio?

Yes, you can include a range of evidence or add to the existing requirements for each unit. Your teacher/tutor will advise you on what additional evidence you will need (if any).
